The Fascinating World of Numbers
The world of numbers is a fascinating one. It dates back to ancient times and was practiced by civilizations we barely remember who chronicled the use of numerology in their testaments of time. It is said to contain the great arcane wisdom of the ages within its symbolism, so that when numbers do not relate a total truth, it is not in the fault of the numbers, but in the misinformation or ignorance of the interpreter.
Numbers are known as the Word. They predate many other sciences and arts, having their origin with the beginning of recorded word, thought, and history. The symbolism of numbers is one of the indispensable foundations of all science, and has been taught by most of the great mystics and religious philosophers. In fact, the precise formulation of scientific laws is impossible without the elements of numeration. Thomas Taylor stated that “Number was called Arithmos as that which measures and orderly arranges all things, and unites them in harmonious proportion.”
Everything subsisting according to nature has its number. The name of a thing is its Word, or reason of existence. The number of a thing is its power – passive or active – by which it represents its Word or Name. The inter-relations of the Numbers of each represent the fundamental law upon which the configuration and movement of the cosmos depends.
Within number lies a vast amount of information – a reservoir to be tapped by those who know. To the uninitiated eye, numbers are merely a series of mathematical equations, or record keepers. When we speak of number in numerology (the study of number) we do not refer to the offshoot, arithmetic. The number of which we speak is the symbol for information that lies within it. Just as a scientist, educated in the study of chemistry, can look at symbols such as H2o and decipher their meaning, the numerologist, educated in the study of symbolism, can decipher a code within number. Behind each is a complex universe of meaning that interacts with every other number to bring about the harmony and flow of life.
